Who We Are

We are an animal rights group whose primary purpose is to reduce the disease of pet overpopulation, which kills more companion animals than any known illness. We offer free spay/neuter for feral cats and low income persons' felines in Sacramento County. Additionally, we trap, spay and neuter, and release feral cats. Although we do street and shelter rescue and make every attempt to assist independent animal rescuers, we are unable to take in owner relinquished animals. However, we do offer online listings for the public. For details, visit our website.

AnimalSavers rescues animals primarily from Sacramento, but targets the Bay Area for homes because Sacramento has an unspeakable 90% kill rate at their shelters, killing an estimated 50 animals daily. Secondly, by local ordinance the county shelters sells up to 7% for medical research and experimentation to U.C. Davis and Sutter Medical Center, and has been the target of national protest by PETA, among other animal welfare organizations.
picture of shelter dogAdditionally, the Sacramento County shelter has recently been sued by In Defense of Animals, the Animal Protection Institute and AVAR for illegally killing healthy animals before placing them up for adoption to the public or recovery by their families, in clear violation of California law. (Click here to read more.) As if this wasn't dismal enough, the average lifespan for a dog or cat in Sacramento county is reportedly a mere 1 1/2 years, due to improper fencing, failure to immunize, low spay/neuter rates, lack of microchipping and i.d. tagging pets, and general indifference to their health care. In contrast, two cities in the Bay Area, Oakland and San Francisco, were ranked in the top 5 throughout the nation for pet care and life expectancy.
While trying to upgrade the quality of life for pets in Sacramento, we are working diligently to change the conditions of our county shelter and find homes outside of this humanely reprehensible community.

Adopting

Roxie Zee-Zee and Karl Our animals may be seen by appointment only after a successful application is completed. If you find someone you like from our available pet list, be sure to fill out our adoption application located on our website at http://www.geocities.com/animalsaversofcalifornia. We will then contact you to arrange a meeting with our animal friends.

Our animals are fostered in the Bay Area and Sacramento. The Sacramento animals are transported approximately once every two weeks to meet their approved Bay Area applicants. Between those visits, the animals may viewed at their foster homes.

Our beautiful puppies contracted Parvo at the kill shelter we rescued them from. Although they received their first vaccines there, they were ineffective One puppy has died. It will cost $1200.00 for medication to save the rest. Can you please help these precious, innocent creatures? If so, please email us at animalsaverscal@gamil.com. And thanks in advance for being an AnimalSaver.

Glass Slippers Fund

Slippers, a one year old, Rhodesian Ridgeback mix, had adhesions in her abdominal region, which required lifesaving surgery. Unfortunately, we were unable to raise the money in time. In her honor and to prevent this from ever happening again, we have started the Glass Slippers Fund. All money donated to it will be used for treatable but expensive medical procedures on young, homeless pets. To contribute please call us at e-mail us at animalsaverscal@gmail.com. If you are a veterinarian or know one who can assist us by offering discounts in these extraordinary cases, please let us know.

Fostering a Friend, Saving the World

Gorman We urgently need help fostering animals. If interested, please complete our adoption application at http://www.geocities.com/animalsaversofcalifornia, which we use for screening all foster and permanent homes.

When you foster, we provide the food and cover the medical costs. When we receive a satisfactory application for the foster animal, we let you know. Then a mutually convenient time and place (your home or, if you prefer, another location) is arranged for the applicant to meet your animal. If s/he likes the animal, the adoption occurs right then and there.

A Jewish saying is "To save one life is to save a whole world." And, as the Little Prince taught, we are always responsible for what we have tamed. If you can foster, you can help stop Sacramento's inexcusable, animal holocaust. Please show these trusting creatures that we are worthy of their faith.
